Does Thailand use yaoi to attract Japanese tourists? And it works as well

The yaoi genre is becoming more and more popular among anime and manga fans and, in recent years, themed works have increased. There are even some countries, such as Thailand, which are exploiting these series to attract Japanese tourists.

In recent years, many Yaoi titles have arrived in Italy thanks to J-Pop and numerous other publishers, without considering the large amount of anime adaptations announced in recent times, just think of Sasaki to Miyano coming out in 2022. However, not only in Japan the works BL (Boy’s Love) are very famous, just like in Thailandfor example, where the genre is extremely well known.

Earlier this month the Mini Thai Festival, a Thai themed event where the tourism authorities of the country in question have dedicated a corner entirely to the ‘Thai BL’ world, also known as ‘Series Y (Yaoi)’. This kind of event is dedicated to Japanese tourists, especially women as the authorities say, therefore a tool to sponsor the nation. The Tourism Authority of Thailandin fact, they even organized an 8-seat trip to visit some of the iconic locations of the most popular BL drama titles, which sold out in minutes. The professor Rujirat Ishikawafrom Aoyama Gakuin University, commented on Thailand’s growing interest in the genre: “Thai society has changed, paving the way for a series of homegrown Thai theater productions”, underlining the clear step forward over the years ’80 when the yaoi world was mostly limited to Japan only.
