ONE PIECE: Marco and his transformation in the anime, we remember his change of design

by Harry Brown

There are characters who inevitably change design over time. It happens in manga and it also happens in anime, when at first it is not understood that a character appeared in the background could become important in the future. In the’ONE PIECE animewhich has lasted for decades, there is no shortage of such examples.

One of the most famous is Marco la Fenice. The commander of Whitebeard’s first fleet, and thus the emperor’s right hand before the latter died, is well known for his lock of blond hair that makes him resemble a pineapple and for his ability to transform into a phoenix. There is another transformation, however, for Marco in the ONE PIECE anime which for many has gone unnoticed, but not for all.

In his first appearances in ONE PIECE, Marco the Phoenix was a completely anonymous character and with not so defined features. There was still her forelock, but this was blue, as well as the clothing was much simpler and great for a background character, certainly not a big shot. As we move forward and with Oda making it clear how important this figure is, Marco changes and becomes more faithful to what we know, with a very different dress and a tattoo on his chest which is however red and not blue as in the final design.

Then the character switches to his final form in ONE PIECE, as recalled by fan Willy on Twitter who shared a collage of this transformation of Marco the Phoenix below. By now the former commander of Whitebeard is also showing off his flames in Wano, while a fan has decided to create a painting of Marco in the form of a phoenix.
